Walk-in Chapel offers wedding services just steps from Duval County Courthouse

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Duval County Clerk has not performed a wedding ceremony since Florida’s ban on same-sex marriages ended in 2015.

The office continues to issue marriage licenses to all couples, but the office said its employees are not required by Florida law to perform ceremonies, so they no longer provide this service to anyone.

The decision was not without controversy.

But now, a few steps from the Duval County Courthouse and between two buildings, a pizzeria and cafe have a solution for couples who want to get married quickly and easily.

The company has a walk-in wedding chapel.

“The idea developed after I realized the difficulties people have in getting married in Jacksonville,” said Chaplain Scott Shubert, a retired Navy veteran.

“The Morning Show” filmed one of Shubert’s weddings live on our show Thursday at 5 am. If you missed it, you can watch the video above to see the happy times.

Shubert has celebrated nearly 20 weddings since opening his Walk-In Wedding Chapel a month ago at Maddy D’s cafe on West Adams Street. He performed five weddings alone on Tuesday.

Shubert said he accommodates everyone for his services, including same-sex couples.

“People can literally come here first, and then they can either access the prenuptial counseling online, or they can do it here, and then they can cross the street, waive the three day wait penalty, waive the $ 25 and come back. and have a beautiful marriage experience, ”Shubert said.

For only $ 49 and an hour of their time.

“We give them a very beautiful Christian wedding ceremony, give them God’s blessing and take pictures of them,” Shubert said.

Maddy D owners Kealalani and David Amin have said once it’s official, guests enjoying their breakfast or lunch clap and cheer on the married couple.

Courthouse wedding ceremonies are no longer held in Duval, Baker or Clay counties.
